The Mount Airy Town Council voted to adopt Ordinance 20 24 dash 24, a budget amendment adding $95,000 to complete culvert repairs and paving on the Rails-to-Trails segment east of Main Street.
Council members said $57,269 of the amount will come from the parks reserve account; staff reported the reserve account balance is roughly $400,000 so the transfer will not exhaust the reserve. The amendment funds the stretch from the Blossom and Basket boardwalk area to Watkins Park and uses leftover open-space program funds tied to the Summit Ridge development, according to staff comments at the meeting.
Members discussed recent vandalism to bench art and a bike-repair station on the trail’s west portion; council members noted repair costs come from reserves rather than insurance and expressed frustration over recurring vandalism. Once the paving and bridge work funded by this amendment are complete, staff said that portion of the trail will be finished.
The ordinance passed on a voice vote.
Councilmembers asked staff to track maintenance obligations and future repair needs in their budget planning.
