Marion County Commission approves speed-limit change, jail access control and other routine items; votes, bids set in motion

The Marion County Commission on Oct. 27, 2025 approved a series of routine actions: lowering the speed limit on County Highway 42, purchasing new furniture for the Board of Registrars, awarding a contract balance for access control at the county jail and initiating bidding for a courthouse HVAC upgrade. Commissioners also approved dispersing capital-improvement monies to districts and heard a presentation of a draft garbage resolution.

Commissioners said the changes are largely operational and intended to complete ongoing construction and facilities work. The most consequential item for public safety was a local speed-limit reduction near new recreation facilities; the most consequential procurement was the final access-control work for the new Marion County Jail.

The commission voted to lower the speed limit on County Highway 42 to 35 miles per hour from its intersection with U.S. 43 to the Bayou Hatcher River Bridge, citing the nearby City of Hamilton recreation improvements.
