Jake Slavin, representing the Petersburg Rod and Gun Club, presented a report on Feb. 3 updating the assembly about range activities and requested borough assistance for several improvements at the Petersburg public shooting range.
Slavin said the club has hosted two National Rifle League events, completed new shooting benches, made shelter improvements funded by an NRA Foundation grant and installed security cameras paid for by club members with a match from Petersburg Mental Health. The club currently has about 75 members and runs public shotgun leagues and safety classes.
For 2025 the Rod and Gun Club requested three actions from the borough: (1) installation of a street light on the power pole next to the Owl House to illuminate the public parking lot and provide power at no cost to the club; (2) provision of a few loads of rock to assist efforts to achieve ADA-compliant access to reach the firing line; and (3) continued borough support for range maintenance. Slavin noted the parking lot is very dark at night and said the club is planning accessibility improvements and clubhouse rebuilding efforts funded by grants such as Pittman-Robertson and Alaska Fish and Game Hunter Safety Program.
Slavin said the club discussed adding a volunteer watch/host to help reduce vandalism and maintain the site and clarified any such position would be voluntary. An assembly member suggested the club submit an official letter or email to the borough manager to formalize the requests; Slavin said discussions have occurred but no formal submission had yet been made.
