China urges implementation of Gaza ceasefire and signals Security Council consultations on West Bank

Ambassador Fusong said that while there is a ceasefire in Gaza "now there is a ceasefire, but the situation remains fragile," and he urged the international community to ensure the agreement is implemented "fully and effectively" and that humanitarian access remain "open and unhindered."
He noted that "phase 1 of the ceasefire arrangement will end by the end of the month" and called on the international community to "promote a comprehensive and a permanent ceasefire and ensure that the ceasefire is uninterrupted and irreversible." On the West Bank, he said there were recent reports of Israeli military attacks against residential blocks and refugee camps and that the Palestinian mission presented a letter to the Security Council president asking for swift action.
"This morning, I met with Minister Mansoor of the Palestinian mission. And he explained he actually presented a letter to the president of the Security Council, and asked the Security Council, to take swift actions to stop the situation," Ambassador Fusong said. He added the mission was consulting with Security Council member states "on the possible meeting" and "on the format and the timing of that meeting."
Ambassador Fusong said the council will "closely follow the developments and take actions if needed so as to ensure that the ceasefire agreement is implemented fully and effectively and that the humanitarian access remains open and unhindered." He also told reporters the council would pay close attention to agency and humanitarian issues in the occupied territories.
The remarks came during a press briefing at the Permanent Mission of China; no formal Security Council meeting on the West Bank was announced during the briefing.
