Rules committee recommends supervisors— appointments to regional boards; one public speaker questions reentry-council pick

The San Francisco Rules Committee on Feb. 3 voted to recommend to the full Board of Supervisors a slate of supervisorial appointments to regional boards and local oversight committees.

The clerk read a set of appointments to be forwarded together: supervisor Mahmood to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Board of Directors (term to Feb. 1, 2029 or until the appointee—s board term ends); supervisor Connie Chan to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (indefinite or until board term ends); supervisor Matt Dorsey as an alternate to the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (indefinite); supervisor Danny Salter to the Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District Board of Directors (term ending Jan. 31, 2027); supervisor Connie Chan to the Free City College Oversight Committee (indefinite); supervisor Myrna Melgar to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (term ending Feb. 10, 2027); supervisor Matt Dorsey to the Reentry Council (term ending June 1, 2026); and supervisor Matt Dorsey to the Association of Bay Area Governments Executive Board (term ending June 30, 2025).

The committee heard a single public commenter about the block of appointments. Leah McIver, a resident of District 6, spoke about item 10 (the Reentry Council appointment). McIver said she questions whether Supervisor Dorsey is a good fit for the Reentry Council given legislation and positions she characterized as emphasizing criminalization, incarceration and abstinence-only approaches to substance use. "I question if he's a good fit for everyone, who needs services from the reentry council," McIver said.

Committee members then moved and voted to forward items 4 through 11 to the full board with recommendation. Vice Chair Cheryl, President Mandelmann and Chair Walton each recorded "aye" votes and the clerk said the motion passed without objection.

The slate of appointments will appear on the full Board of Supervisors agenda for consideration.
