The Local Alcoholic Beverage Board of Marion County on Feb. 3 approved a license for a Pickler indoor pickleball facility with a self-serve tap wall, but conditioned the approval on the applicant working with excise to ensure minors cannot access the tap wall.
Why it matters: the venue model — recreational courts co-located with a self-serve alcohol dispensing wall activated by members’ QR codes — raised operational questions about how to prevent underage access and how to supervise dispensing without a staffed bar.
Applicant attorney Matt Price described the franchise model and said the tap wall is activated by a member’s QR code and that the system will lock out dispensing after a programmed volume; the franchisee said licensed employees would supervise the area and that the courts themselves would remain alcohol-free. Board members pressed for a clear plan to prevent minors from using members’ phones to access the tap wall and asked for a restricted lounge area or wristbanding to make on-floor checks easier.
The board approved the permit after the applicant agreed to address separation and staffing as part of excise’s on-site inspection and to consider wristbanding and dedicated staff for the tap wall. Excise will verify the proposed layout and operational controls at inspection before the permit is fully activated.
Provenance: testimony from Matt Price and Ron Brock (applicant representatives) is on the record; board discussion and vote recorded Feb. 3.
