Committee briefed on $8.79 million Trinity Strand Trail construction contract to be considered by council
Summary
The Park and Recreation Department will ask the City Council to execute a construction services contract not to exceed $8,790,000, funded by the Design District TIF, to build two bridges and a trail segment connecting to the Trinity Strand Trail.
Staff told the Economic Development Committee that the Park and Recreation Department will present a contract award request to the City Council next week for construction work not to exceed $8,790,000. The funding is coming from the Design District TIF and the contract will fund two bridges and a new trail segment of the Trinity Strand Trail High Line SPAN project.
Sue Hounsell of the Office of Economic Development said the TIF district funded the design work and is providing construction funding. She said the project was designed and bid in two segments to allow flexibility in funding and that the bid includes both segments: "Initially, when this was designed and bid, it was done in 2 segments ... But it is all included," she said.
Committee member Steward described the project as “a labor of love” for district stakeholders and said the added bridge and trail connection will improve pedestrian access across I-35 and connect hotels, medical district trails and residential areas on the west side of the interstate. Kevin Spath and other staff noted the project has involved collaboration with Friends of the Trinity Strand Trail, the Circuit Trail Conservancy (the Loop), Dallas County and Park and Recreation.
Hounsell said the Park and Recreation Board has recommended approval and that the item on next week’s City Council agenda would be the construction contract award.
Ending: The committee offered no objection; final approval of the construction contract is pending City Council action next week.
