Saratoga Springs commissioners said they plan to memorialize firefighter Francis Southern and will limit a proposed street-renaming public hearing to a single street.
Commissioner Cole said he learned through family members in the fire department that Southern Place was named for Francis Southern, who died in the line of duty in 1975. “It was named after Francis Southern, who died in the line of duty in 1975,” Commissioner Cole said. The council said Mr. Southern’s son is expected to attend the public hearing.
City staff explained the originally advertised legal notice named two streets for possible renaming; the council intends to remove one of those streets from consideration at the meeting and proceed with renaming the remaining street (referred to in the packet as Bridal/Britain). Staff advised that removing a street from the list by amendment on passage is acceptable if the other street remains as advertised in the legal notice and proposed legislation.
Council members discussed the sequence: public comment and the family’s remarks would occur during the hearing, followed by council action to memorialize Mr. Southern and to amend the proposed legislation to remove the other street from consideration. No formal vote took place at this meeting; the public hearing and the potential motion to amend the local law were scheduled for the next meeting.
