Onslow County Health Department promotes heart-health programs, CPR training and flu shots

Van Pelt, identified as a public health educator with the Onslow County Health Department, framed February as American Heart Health Month and urged residents to increase physical activity, limit processed foods, reduce smoking and alcohol intake, and improve sleep hygiene. “It's very important we take different steps to reduce our risk of heart disease,” she said.
She described the department’s Healthy for Life class—free to community members—which covers nutrition, shopping on a budget and reading nutrition labels. Van Pelt also described a year-long diabetes-prevention program in which participants receive extended education and support.
On CPR training, Van Pelt noted the health department offers in-person courses that run three to four hours, can be partially online, cost $75–$95, and issue certification valid for two years. “Those trainings are really helpful because they provide you with different abilities to provide those life saving measures if need be,” she said.
The department encouraged residents to stay up to date on influenza vaccination and to call for immunization appointments.
