Council approves resolution to install flagpole at Murphy Field in honor of Private Michael G. Murphy

The Newport City Council approved a resolution requesting installation of a flagpole at Murphy Field to honor Private Michael G. Murphy and directed the city administration to coordinate with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 406 on the project.
Commander Anselm Richardson of VFW Post 406 told the council the post is undertaking fundraising to restore proper signage and erect a flagpole similar to Morton Park’s illuminated flagpole. Richardson described Murphy’s service and historical naming of the field in 1932 and said the post will support a financial campaign to restore recognition. "What will VFW post 406 do? We're undertaking a quite substantial financial campaign to support this action," Richardson said.
Councilors thanked veterans and local volunteers who maintain flag displays and agreed the city would assist with necessary electrical connections if needed. One councilor noted former city historian Patrick Murphy's research and local support for the effort.
Action taken: The council moved, seconded and approved the resolution directing city administration to work with VFW Post 406 on the Murphy Field flagpole and signage. The vote was recorded as in favor.
The resolution calls for city coordination with the VFW post; the VFW commander said fundraising will cover costs and the city indicated willingness to offer electrical support if necessary. No construction contract or city capital appropriation was approved at the meeting.
