Porterville council accepts certified canvas, declares winners of Nov. 5 election

The Porterville City Council on Tuesday voted to accept the official canvas and statement of votes from the Tulare County Registrar of Voters for the Nov. 5, 2024 municipal election, formally certifying the results.
City staff reported that, per the county certification on Dec. 3, 2024, AJ Rivas prevailed in District 3 with 1,327 votes (51.35%) to Tim Vannie's 1,257 votes (48.65%). In District 4, Ed McCurvey received 2,575 votes (71.81%) and Don Wyrock received 1,011 votes (28.19%). Because Stan Green was the only qualified candidate for District 5, the council previously appointed him in lieu of an election on Sept. 17, 2024, staff said.
The item was introduced by a staff presentation summarizing the county-certified statement of votes and the statutory requirement that the elections official “duly canvas the returns and declare the results” following the city charter. After a short period with no council questions, a council member moved to accept the official canvas and another member seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
The council approved a draft resolution accepting the certified canvas and statement of votes as provided by the Tulare County Registrar of Voters. Copies of the county certification were included in the council packet, staff said.
No contestable challenges, recounts, or legal actions were reported to the council during the meeting.
