Finance staff said, “We are statutorily required to annually prepare a proposed budget no later than July 5,” and described the process to post the proposed budget, provide at least 10 days’ public notice and conduct a hearing before adoption. The board voted to call the public hearing for June 24 and begin the notice period.
Why it matters: Adoption of the budget sets staffing, program and spending levels for the coming school year. Staff told the board they had projected a decrease of about 463 in the student weight count, which translates to an estimated $2.3 million reduction in base-level revenue. To cover operating needs staff proposed transferring approximately $4.2 million from capital funds to M&O and using district carryover while working to recoup prior-year refunds related to Quasi‑Meier issues (staff cited roughly $24.4 million previously refunded from district reserves).
Board action and next steps: The board approved posting the proposed FY2025–26 budget and scheduling the June 24 public hearing by a 4–0 vote with one abstention. Staff will publish the proposed budget and the ADE notice, deliver school-site cut memos to trustees and return to the board for adoption before July 15 as required by state law.
