Hermosa Beach board honors outgoing members, swears in two new trustees

The Hermosa Beach City School District Governing Board used the Dec. 11 meeting to recognize two departing trustees for their years of service and to swear in two newly elected members.
Superintendent Susan Wilds opened the recognition, thanking Board President Quintin Kluth and Board Member Doug Gardner for leadership during challenging years, including the COVID‑19 period and multiple capital projects. "Their thoughtful decision making and willingness to listen to diverse perspectives ... ensured that our Hermosa schools remain safe," Wilds said.
Mayor Dean Francois presented certificates and a city plaque in appreciation of Gardner and Kluth’s volunteer service. Board colleagues described Gardner’s seven years on the board and Kluth’s four years, noting their roles in passing Measure S and Measure HV and completing two new school facilities. Gardner reflected on his tenure, saying, "I feel like I've left HBCSD in a better place than when I joined the board," and thanked staff, families and his wife for support.
After the recognitions the board administered the oath of office to Carol Reed Cluth and Rachel VanLandingham. Each took the standard oath to support the U.S. and California constitutions and to faithfully perform the duties of a board member. The board and superintendent welcomed both new trustees and invited family members to join them for a photo on the dais.

Ending Trustees said they will hold an organizational meeting the following week in keeping with California Education Code timing for post‑election reorganization. The district posted that a copy of the closed‑session resignation agreement is available for public inspection upon request.
