Combs district highlights student achievements: jazz band, esports champions and middle-school math team honored

The J O Combs Unified School District used part of its December meeting to recognize long-serving board members, honor staff who work with special education students, and celebrate a string of student achievements across the district.
Board members Shelly (16 years), Bob Delena (10 years) and Jennifer Tucker (two years) were thanked publicly for their service. The district said Shelly and Delena were nominated for an Arizona School Boards Association Honor Roll award that recognizes long-serving board members; the award will be presented after the holidays.
Students and staff recognized included the district jazz ensemble and several athletic and academic teams. Combs High School's jazz band performed before the meeting. Robert Testa, identified as the head esports coach at Combs High School, described the district's newly established elementary- and middle-school esports league and introduced the first-ever Combs Esports champions, whose names were presented at the meeting.
Combs Middle School received particular attention: staff and students highlighted athletic success, and the middle school's math team won first place for overall average in the Pinal County Middle School Math Competition. Students Mariana and Luke spoke to the board about the competition experience; staff said 15 schools competed and that several individual and partner placements were awarded.
The meeting also recognized staff who support students with special needs from multiple schools across the district and named district students of the month for innovation and technology from several campuses, including Combs High School, Combs Center for Success, Combs Middle School, Combs Traditional Academy, Ellsworth, Harmon, Ranch and Simonton.
The board paused briefly to take photos, present plaques and awards, and to note community partnerships, including a Central Christian Church donation of gifts and the Santan Lions Club's contributions to family supports.
No formal action was required for the recognitions; the presentations were part of the superintendent's report and celebratory agenda items.
