The Aransas Pass City Council on Tuesday voted to place six proposed amendments to the city charter before voters in the May 3, 2025 election, after reviewing 16 possible changes at length and removing or postponing the rest.
Council members agreed to send propositions 3, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 15 to the ballot. The decisions followed debate over whether some language duplicated existing practice, could be implemented through ordinance or policy instead of a charter change, or would have retroactive effect on current officeholders.
The council considered a wide range of proposals, from term limits and limits on the city manager heading multiple departments to requiring voter approval for bond issues above a dollar threshold. City attorney and council members repeatedly noted that several of the proposed changes were already implemented through existing audits, budgets or ordinances and therefore did not need charter language.
