Milan board schedules Jan. 22 Big Red Board chat on superintendent search; welcomes new trustee

The Milan Area Schools Board of Education told the public it will hold a Big Red Board chat on Wednesday, Jan. 22 from 6:30–8 p.m. at Simons Elementary School auditorium to collect community feedback for the district's next superintendent. Board members said they plan to meet with bargaining committees in January — including the Milan Education Association bargaining committee, the support-staff bargaining committee, and representatives for transportation and food service — to gather input as part of the appointment process.
The personnel-and-leadership committee, comprised of board members Farrow and Gutierrez and the board president, said it has begun meetings with administrative teams and has reached out to bargaining-unit leadership. The committee asked the public to attend the Jan. 22 Big Red Board chat or share feedback directly with committee members.
The board also administered a ceremonial oath of office for newly appointed board member Gabe Burdette. Trustees welcomed Burdette and said he will receive an orientation session coordinated by Mr. Syslo and district staff. Burdette said he has already enrolled in two Michigan Association of School Boards courses, including one on superintendent evaluation, and said he will report back on those courses in future meetings.
Board members repeatedly encouraged public participation in the Jan. 22 event, noting low turnout at recent Big Red Board chats and stating the hiring process depends on community input.
