The Flint Board of Education voted 7‑0 to approve action item 21.9, a settlement agreement and release between Flint Community Schools and Johnson Controls Inc. Board members said the vote brings closure to a long‑running facilities contract issue.
Superintendent Jones introduced the settlement after noting the board previously met in closed session to review the matter. Board discussion referenced a complex history with Johnson Controls stretching back several years; trustees described the outcome as a compromise that allows the district to obtain finality while ensuring completion of contracted services funded by local bonds.
Board members repeatedly emphasized they could not publicly discuss the full confidential terms. Trustee comments included strong criticisms of Johnson Controls’ conduct in the past and expressions of relief that the matter is now resolved. District counsel and administration noted the district will complete the remaining payment under bond funding and that the construction and HVAC services tied to the contract are finished.
The board conducted a roll‑call vote on the settlement. Secretary Perkins, Trustee Boos, Vice President McIntyre, Trustee Relleford (Rellefer), Trustee King, Treasurer Looney and the board president each voted yes; the motion passed 7‑0. The superintendent said the district’s CFO will coordinate final payment steps and that there is a January 31st deadline to complete required actions tied to the settlement and bond schedule.
Because the agreement includes confidential and nondisclosure provisions, the board did not release settlement figures or many contract details at the meeting. District officials advised reporters and board members that further repayment and contract‑closure logistics will be handled by the CFO and administration.
