Caledonia student says virtual program enrollment ended after snow-day attendance shortfall

Jed Black, a senior at Caledonia High School, told the Caledonia Community Schools Board of Education on Dec. 16 that he was removed from the district's virtual learning program after missing required in-person attendance during a week when a scheduled Thursday on-site session was canceled for inclement weather.
Black said he began the virtual program this semester and had maintained strong academic standing, including a reported weighted GPA of 4.17. He told the board the virtual program’s attendance policy requires students to be present for six hours per week in-person, and that the canceled Thursday meant he fell short of that metric. Black said on Dec. 13 he was informed he must return to in-person classes or transfer to another school to continue online learning.
Black said he had tried to resolve the matter before the meeting with multiple district staff, including the director of the virtual learning program, his school counselor and the principal, but he had not found a satisfactory solution. He told the board he was presenting the issue after exhausting other options.
The board did not take formal action on Black’s statement during the meeting. No remedy or policy change was announced. The superintendent’s office or relevant administrators were expected to follow up with the student after the meeting, per the meeting’s public comment procedure.
