Board reviews draft food-service contract with township for senior meals; action scheduled for Jan. 16

District staff and legal counsel presented a draft contract that formalizes the longstanding arrangement by which the Waterford School District's food-service staff prepare congregate meals and Meals on Wheels at the township senior center.
Jeremy Moats, the district attorney, and district staff explained the contract was drafted at the township’s request to replace an informal, in-house arrangement. Under the proposed contract the township pays the district a per-meal price intended to cover the school food-service department’s costs; staff said the arrangement was not intended to generate significant profit for the district.
District presenters told trustees the township had already approved the contract at its last meeting. The board discussed liability and operational logistics: district employees preparing and serving food remain district employees, the district operates under permissions to use the senior-center kitchen, and liability for building-related causes would rest with the township while operational issues caused by district staff would remain the district's responsibility. The district characterized the contract as “cost neutral.”
Administrators said they requested board action at the Jan. 16 meeting. Staff also said continuing the service for a two-week period before the board's formal approval would be acceptable from a legal standpoint and that the township has approved the contract.
No vote was taken at the December meeting; staff invited board members to submit follow-up questions and said they would provide details and contract language for review prior to the January action item.
