The Waterford School District Board of Education recognized the Waterford Senior Center and its staff at the meeting, marking more than 50 years of local service and announcing that, beginning in January, the senior center will merge with the Waterford Parks and Recreation Department.
Board members praised the center’s programs, which include congregate activities and Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors, and thanked staff, volunteers and community partners. The board formally acknowledged Erin Asdell, the senior center coordinator, and Danielle Fidler, auxiliary services director, for their roles in serving older adults.
Asdell told the board she has worked for the district for 28 years and called the work a privilege. She said she will be retiring from the school district and will continue her role working for the township after the merger. Fidler echoed Asdell’s remarks and the two were presented with plaques and a commemorative coin; a formal letter from the president of the United States was read in appreciation of their service to the community.
Board members and community speakers offered thanks and reflected on the senior center’s community role. The board said it was pleased the transition will keep senior programs and Meals on Wheels operating and that Parks and Recreation staff will continue to provide essential senior services.
No board action was required; the recognition and transition were presented as informational and ceremonial.
