District staff say HVAC controls need wide upgrades after vendor assessment

Assistant Superintendent Alka briefed the Waterford School District Board of Education on a facilities information item: a districtwide assessment of HVAC controls performed by Metro Controls.
Alka told trustees the assessment found widespread need to replace or upgrade control panels so the district can monitor and operate heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment remotely across multiple buildings. The presentation noted many buildings have newer HVAC equipment that is difficult to communicate with using the district's existing control panels.
The presentation also covered laboratory fume hoods at the high schools. Alka said fume hood controls had been pneumatic and the district is migrating those high-school systems to electric controls so exhaust systems will be compatible with the new building controls.
District officials said Metro Controls was the vendor that supplied the assessment and the first bid response; staff described having a single responsive vendor on initial bids for controls work and said they have been satisfied with Metro Controls' performance to date. The district reported the initial bid price came in lower than expected.
Alka framed the upgrades as both an operational efficiency (remote monitoring and remote diagnostics) and a safety/maintenance benefit (earlier detection of equipment failures). Trustees asked clarifying questions about the scope, vendor relationship and next steps. Staff said they will bring an action recommendation to a future meeting to authorize the work.
