Wyoming Area SD accepts staff resignations, approves hires and spring-coaching roster; head girls softball coach to retire after 2024–25 season

The Wyoming Area School Board on Dec. 17 accepted several personnel actions and approved a slate of assistant and volunteer coaches for the 2024–25 spring sports season.

In the education report, the board approved maternity and medical leaves and accepted resignations. The board approved a maternity leave request for employee 20495 effective on or about March 30, 2025, with an anticipated return the first day of the 2025–26 school year. The board approved an extension of the maternity leave for employee 20243 through Jan. 28, 2025. The board accepted with regret a resignation from employee 20329, listed in the record as a social worker, effective Feb. 4, 2025, and accepted the resignation of employee 7002, listed as a career-technology teacher, effective Feb. 15, 2025.

The board approved appointments and staffing changes including the appointment of Judy Cefalo from third-grade teacher to Title I reading specialist and the placement of temporary professional employee Christine Wagner at Bachelor Step 6 ($45,069). The board approved a medical leave for employee 2825 effective Jan. 6 through Feb. 28, 2025, with a return date of March 3, 2025, and approved an agreement allowing members of the professional staff to voluntarily donate sick leave to employee 2825 for the 2024–25 school year.

In the building and support-staff report, the board rescinded two previously reported appointments and approved new support-staff hires, including Bridal Jerchak (food-service employee, increase from 4 hours to 5.25 hours), Mary Anne Wheeler (personal care aide), and Caitlin Ocasio (paraprofessional). The board also approved an agreement allowing support staff members to voluntarily donate one sick day during 2024–25 for use at the discretion of employee 20435.

The activities report contained approval of assistant and volunteer coaches for spring sports, including a list of baseball and track coaches and volunteer lacrosse and track staff. The board approved the request from Vanessa Smith and the Wyoming Area Wrestling Parents Association to sell raffle tickets at the district’s Dec. 22 tournament.

The board also approved John McNeil as head girls softball coach for the 2024–25 spring season and accepted his resignation/retirement effective at the end of that season. When asked how long McNeil had served, the superintendent said he had been at least the last four years; board members said they would advertise and fill the position after the season ends.

A public commenter urged the district to expand unified or inclusive sports opportunities for students with disabilities, citing neighboring districts that participate in Special Olympics unified sports programs.
