Lina Hanna, a representative of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, presented Derry Area School District with the Great Pennsylvania Schools designation during the Board of School Directors meeting on Jan. 27, 2025.
Hanna said the designation recognizes districts that demonstrate "a commitment to academic rigor, community, resilience, and financial health," and commended Derry for student engagement, innovative programming and fiscal practices. "Your students are both successful and were challenged by the district's curriculum," Hanna said.
The designation, Hanna said, highlights strong extracurricular offerings, emergency preparedness and mental health supports in the district. She urged the board and administrators to publicize the award using PSBA materials such as logos, pins and social media tags.
Board and district officials accepted the award remotely and in person. A district representative thanked Hanna for visiting earlier in the week and noted the district's agriculture program and use of emerging technologies including drones and artificial intelligence in instruction.
Hanna encouraged continued participation in PSBA rural collaboratives and said she would be available for follow-up support.
The presentation was largely ceremonial; no formal board action was recorded specifically tied to the designation. Board members said they plan to display PSBA materials and to publicize the recognition on the district's channels.
The board meeting included routine business and personnel items following the presentation.
