Summary
Parents at the Jan. 21 meeting raised concerns about cold classrooms and requested remediation; district officials said repairs were underway, summarized a facilities study and noted fundraising and grant-seeking for auditorium seat replacement and other upgrades.
Parents raised concerns about heating and other facilities issues at the Wyoming Area School District board meeting on Jan. 21, 2025, saying some classrooms had been cold and that students and teachers had relocated because of low temperatures.
One parent said students reported seeing their breath in classrooms and asked whether all rooms had been checked to ensure they met the minimum required temperature. A second parent said there were videos showing cold-air blowing into rooms and asked the district to verify repairs. Parents said cold classrooms interfere with learning and requested clearer communication about repairs and preventative measures.
District officials responded that they had contracted with a vendor (NRG referenced in the meeting) for heating repairs and that administration would double-check room temperatures across all buildings. The administration said the system is set to 70 degrees but that they would re-inspect rooms and follow up with parents the next day.
Separately the board reported progress on auditorium upgrades: the “back of house” work (curtains, lights, sound and projector) was completed the prior year; the Wyoming Area Education Foundation is conducting a fundraiser to finance new front-of-house seats, estimated at about $385,000. District officials said the full front-of-house renovation (walls, flooring and related work) is estimated at approximately $1.1 million; they also said a facilities study covering four buildings, the stadium and the field house has been completed and that the district has engaged a grant writer to pursue additional funding.
The board said it will continue to review the facilities study recommendations, pursue grant opportunities and follow up on heating repairs and communications to families.
