Mr. Cameron presented the policy and told the board the regulation will clarify how the district complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act and distinguish service animals from emotional‑support animals. “There is a difference,” Cameron said during the discussion, and he said the regulations will lay out how the policy will be enforced and how the district will address instances that arise at school events.
Cameron told the board the district has not had service animals regularly accompanying staff but has seen instances at athletic events, which prompted proactive policy drafting. The regulations will be brought to the board at first reading alongside the second reading of the policy in January for further discussion.
The board approved the motion to adopt the policy’s first reading as presented; the meeting record indicates the motion carried by voice vote.
