City engineer outlines downtown street rehab, Measure E resurfacing and three prefabricated restrooms

City Engineer Bjorn Jones gave the council a brief update on several public-works projects underway or scheduled in Grass Valley, citing recently completed plaza staining, ongoing downtown sidewalk and curb work, a Measure E pavement maintenance program beginning with night work, and the fabrication and planned installation of three prefabricated restrooms.
Jones said the Mill Street Pedestrian Plaza staining and sealing was completed the previous week. He reported sidewalk and curb work on South Auburn Street is nearing completion, with two remaining concrete pours targeting Friday and the following Monday; the contractor will then move to Main Street for curb-ramp replacements and minor island work. "We're hoping that's done on Monday," Jones said about the South Auburn sidewalk pours.
Jones said the Measure E Street Rehab is primarily a microsurfacing treatment that will begin with striping removal and temporary striping, followed by crack-filling, targeted dig-outs and a thin aggregate asphalt layer (microsurfacing) applied later in the month; restriping will follow. He said most Measure E work would be performed at night to reduce daytime impacts.
On parks restroom infrastructure, Jones described three prefabricated restrooms the city purchased and said slabs have been poured. Two restrooms will replace or relocate existing facilities at Connan Park (one lower restroom to be demolished and replaced closer to the playground/barbecue area; one replaced near the disc-golf course) and one will be installed in the Church Street parking lot. Jones said the prefabricated structures are under construction off-site, that the concrete slabs cure for roughly a month before assembly, and that estimated delivery is January. He said staff expects to bring a contract for site-preparation and utility hook-up to council in October.
Council members thanked Jones for the update and for targeting high-need streets for early restriping. Jones noted the downtown tear-up is temporary and urged drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution while crews complete the work.
