AARP grant will buy 300 smoke detectors for seniors as Old Timers breakfast shifts to county oversight

Committee members said the city received a $5,000 grant from AARP to purchase and distribute smoke detectors to seniors.
"We received a grant from AARP in the amount of $5,000 to be able to purchase smoke detectors to hand out to seniors. And so we're in the process of planning more details, for that activity to happen. 300 smoke detectors," a committee member announced.
The committee also discussed the Old Timers breakfast (also called the old-timers day luncheon) and said the event will transition from city management to Curry County oversight. Organizers said the venue will move to the pavilion to accommodate a larger crowd and that timing will be adjusted to share the space with other Pioneer Days programming. The committee said RSVP volunteers and county staff will coordinate the transition and that the event format and menu are under discussion.
Committee members signaled plans to schedule smoke-detector distribution in August and possibly at the Old Timers breakfast.
