The Clark County School Board approved a revised consent procedure (O 8.232418) for outside, traceable communications intended to align district practice with recent legislative requirements referenced in the meeting as SB 181.
Staff described the revised form as a simplified, durable waiver that requires any coach, staff member or volunteer to list the specific adults who are authorized to send communications outside district systems. The district will use ParentSquare as the two-way communications fallback when parents want to interact directly via district-monitored channels. “The only way that a coach or staff in Clark County period or volunteer, frankly, if they list their name specifically on the waiver, and that gives them permission to communicate outside. If they don't fill out the waiver, they do not get to communicate,” a staff member said.
Staff credited Miss Fitton and Stephanie Austin with building an internal sorting tool to map listed names to specific staff, which the district expects will reduce accidental violations. The waiver will remain active for the duration of a student’s enrollment unless revoked; the district will also open the waiver for annual review during online registration. District staff asked for a one- to three-day grace period to process revocations to avoid immediate interruptions of communications when staff are not yet notified.
Board member Mr. Kaiser moved to accept the revised procedure. Mr. Dorsey seconded the motion. The motion carried 5 to 0.
Board materials and staff commentary indicated the change is intended to simplify compliance with state law while preserving a record of who may contact students outside of district systems.
