The approvals, taken after a closed session called under TGC §551.074 for personnel matters, included hires for Perfecto Mancha Elementary, Eagle Pass Junior High, Memorial Junior High, Kennedy Hall, Pete Gallego Elementary and Sam Houston Elementary. The board also voted to approve a general request to hire personnel to fill vacancies as discussed in closed session. One vote included an abstention; the remainder were approved unanimously.
Board President Jorge Herrera convened the special meeting at 12:04 p.m. and moved the board into closed session to consider personnel matters listed under TGC §551.074. After returning to open session at 12:41 p.m., trustees took formal votes on the hiring requests. Each hire was approved “subject to possible future reassignment by the superintendent of schools,” language repeated in the motions for each position.
The board recorded the following specific approvals: Sonia Majors as instructional officer at Perfecto Mancha Elementary; Hector Leija as instructional officer at Eagle Pass Junior High; Laura Mendez as instructional officer at Memorial Junior High (one abstention recorded); Lisa Michelle Muñoz Knapp as principal for Kennedy Hall; Jacqueline Jimenez as principal for Pete Gallego Elementary; and Dora Perez as principal for Sam Houston Elementary. The board earlier approved, by a separate motion, the request to hire personnel to fill vacancies as discussed in closed session.
Trustees who spoke during the meeting included President Jorge Herrera; Secretary Christopher Hiller; Vice President Trustee Martinez; and trustees Morris Lipson, Jaime C. Barrera and Tom Gonzalez. Superintendent Mijares and board attorney Valerie Carrillo were present in the meeting and the closed session announcement cited Texas Government Code §551.074 as the legal basis for the personnel discussion.
The board adjourned the special meeting at 12:46 p.m.
