Council appoints Miles Yuie to Encinitas Youth Commission; asks staff to add alternates to commission rules

The Encinitas City Council appointed Miles Yuie to the Youth Commission on June 24 and instructed staff to prepare code changes to permit alternate youth commissioners.
The city had two eligible applicants for a single vacancy: incumbent Miles Yuie and applicant Lars Willing. Yuie presented a video describing his past year on the commission and his volunteer activities; Willing spoke in person about his community involvement and reasons for serving. Council members praised both applicants. Several members said the city should find a way to keep additional qualified youth involved and asked staff to prepare an ordinance to create alternate positions on the Youth Commission.
Staff explained that the commission’s membership and composition are set in municipal code and that adding alternates requires an ordinance and two readings; staff said a first reading would be scheduled for the council meeting on Aug. 13, with final action to follow later. Council appointed Yuie and asked staff to advertise alternate positions and return with the ordinance and application process so the second candidate could be considered as an alternate.
