San Bernardino council holds closed session; city attorney reports no reportable action

San Bernardino Mayor and City Council convened a special closed session Friday morning; the city attorney told the council there was no reportable action following the meeting.

An unidentified resident used the public comment period before the session to urge council members to appoint a female candidate referenced in the remarks, saying the city needs "stability" and "consistency." The resident said, "I hope that this is a good reason why we're here and that you will make the decision this city needs to move forward," and added, "Choose this woman even if she messes up." The resident referenced several local figures by first name, including "Fred," "Ted" and someone identified as "Montoya," and named "Miss Clayton." The remarks also included: "I've never experienced such dysfunction," and "This infighting has to stop."

The meeting was called to order at 11:17 a.m.; the council convened into closed session at 11:21 a.m. When the council returned to open session, the city attorney reported "there is no reportable action on the closed session items this afternoon." The clerk's roll call at the start showed Council member Ibarra and Council member Flores absent; other members recorded present included Council member Sanchez, Mayor Pro Tem Juan Figueroa, Council member Sherratt, Council member Knauss, Council member Ortiz and Mayor Tran.

No motions, votes or formal appointments were announced in open session. The public comment consisted of individual remarks and requests to the council; the transcript does not identify the speaker by name.

The council announced its next joint regular meeting with the Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency for Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at the Feltime Central Library, 555 West 6th Street, San Bernardino, California 92401; closed session will begin at 4 p.m., and open session at 5 p.m.
