Board approves short summer session; district recommends calendar Option A for 2024–25
Summary
The board approved the district’s proposed short summer session retesting plan and received a presentation recommending Option A for the 2024–25 instructional calendar, which will return as an action item in January.
The Lenoir County Board of Education approved a short summer session proposal Dec. 9 that gives students a four-day, end-of-year opportunity for instruction and retesting on end-of-course (EOC) or grade-level exams. The district presented the plan as a required submission to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Short summer session, as described by staff, is three instructional days of test-taking strategies (about three hours per day) followed by one day of retesting; breakfasts and lunches will be provided and district transportation will be available. Attendance is required for students who use the session to retest. The district proposed dates of June 9–12 and said multiple retest days are built in for students who must retake more than one assessment.
Separately, the board heard a presentation on the 2025 instructional calendar selection process. A calendar committee representing every school considered two options, and staff said Option A won nearly 70% of more than 900 stakeholder votes. Staff noted both options meet state-mandated start and end constraints and that Option A includes more teacher workdays in June to provide buffers for closing the school year during the district’s transition to a new student information system (Infinite Campus). The calendar recommendation will appear as a board action item at the January meeting.
At the Dec. 9 meeting the board approved the short summer session motion by voice vote.
