Olmstead student council highlights new playground features, golden book and March talent show

Olmstead Elementary students and staff presented a school showcase at the Urbandale Community School District board meeting describing new playground features, student recognition programs and upcoming events.
Principal Deborah Bournaro introduced the student council and thanked staff who helped organize the presentation. Student council members described recent additions to the school’s outdoor and schoolwide culture, including a buddy bench, new tetherball equipment, a proposed Gaga ball pit, and plans for a school garden intended to support hands-on plant lessons.
Student Isabel (Izzy) Cain said the buddy bench helps students who are looking for someone to play with and described tetherball and Gaga ball as alternatives to “the same old games.” Other students highlighted the school’s recognition systems: the Golden Book, where nominated students sign an entry during morning announcements, and “J Pay,” a points program students can spend on items including “principal for the day” and other classroom or schoolwide prizes.
The showcase also invited the board and community to a talent show scheduled for March 26 with a matinee at the school and an evening performance at the PAC. Principal Bournaro and Dean Kara Paulstein joined students in summarizing how the programs support social-emotional learning and school community connections.
Board members thanked students and staff for the presentation and took a photo with the student council after the meeting.
