Canfield board adopts policy responding to House Bill 214 requirement

The Canfield Board of Education adopted policy number 2265 on Dec. 11 to implement provisions required under House Bill 214, the district—s policy chair said.
"This is part of House Bill 214, and by January of 2025, school boards must adopt policies that prohibit the requirement for employees, applicants, or students to endorse a specific political belief in their employment, admission, or evaluation," said Mister Biddle, chairman of the policy committee.
The adopted policy was presented as Exhibit 5 on the board—s agenda. The board held the required first reading of several policies earlier in the meeting and then made a motion to adopt 2265. The board approved the motion by roll call.
Board members who spoke during the discussion framed the policy as an implementation of state law; no amendments were offered during the Dec. 11 meeting. The superintendent and the policy committee chair stated the policy is intended to protect individuals from being required to endorse political beliefs as a condition of employment, admission or evaluation.
Ending The board recorded the adoption for the official minutes; the policy will be included in the district policy manual and in materials provided to staff and applicants.
