Northern Burlington board rejects high school auditorium bids; will rebid

The Northern Burlington County Regional School District board voted Dec. 9 to reject all bids for the high school auditorium project and authorized administration to rebid the work.
Business Administrator Kevin Kaz told the board “the bids came in, over budget, so they'll be rejected, today, and we will…authorize me to go out and rebid.” Kaz said the district will follow a familiar negotiation process if bids again come in over budget.
The rejection follows a series of committee discussions about cost-saving options and potential negotiations with the project architect. Board member Robert Zimmer said the district recently met with the architect to “go over some ideas for potential cost savings and potential negotiations.” Kaz told the board the project’s estimated construction timeline is about 18 months; if award is delayed until March, that could push the start roughly three months later. He said the district will try to recover schedule time through negotiations so the auditorium could be available “at the end of September, end of October of 2026.”
Kaz and Zimmer also framed the auditorium work as tied to other facilities plans. Kaz earlier described upcoming professional services for civil engineering in advance of the 2025–26 budget that include synthetic turf for the stadium, irrigation expansion and development of a high-school courtyard. Zimmer said the stadium football field is in “drastic need of repair” and that cost estimates for fixing drainage and the crowning on the grass field are about $600,000 — part of the facilities conversation that the board said influenced timing and scope decisions for the auditorium and field projects.
The board made the decision on a motion to reject and rebid the auditorium project; the motion passed on a voice vote. Board members discussed using a re-bid and, if necessary, negotiation to bring costs in line with the district budget.
Administration said the district will rebid the project and present results to the board. No final contract award was authorized at the Dec. 9 meeting.
