Ocean Township School District honors student athletes and staff; custodian retires

The Township of Ocean Board of Education recognized student and staff accomplishments during its Dec. 10 regular meeting.
Superintendent (name not specified in the record) invited coaches and school leaders to the podium to honor 9th grader Leah Starkey for a record-setting girls cross-country season. Principal Mrs. Donkazuba and coaches said Starkey set multiple school course records and won the NJSIAA Group 2 championship on Nov. 9. The superintendent listed Starkey’s season results, including a 5K time of 8 minutes, 10 seconds at a September meet and a Shore Conference time of 17 minutes, 35 seconds; the superintendent said Starkey finished 10th at the Meet of Champions and 12th at the Foot Locker Regionals in Boston, Massachusetts.
The board also recognized the boys soccer team for winning the public-school division championship. Coaches and the superintendent called players and coaches forward for a group photo and public applause; the superintendent named the roster as part of the recognition.
Nestor Perez, a district custodian with more than 20 years of service, received a retirement plaque. The administration said Perez will receive the plaque after the meeting; Perez later joined the dais to accept thanks from the board.
Student representatives provided a monthly activities report to the board. The student representative said DECA students completed a 100-question multiple-choice test ahead of a district conference and that the in-person portion will be Jan. 10 at Kean University. The report also noted a Key Club supply drive planned for January, a 31-student total for a recent winter blood drive and that yearbooks are on sale. The student reported wins and results for a range of sports teams: girls’ and boys’ bowling teams were undefeated (boys 3–0, girls 2–0), hockey won its first game and boys and girls basketball held scrimmages.
No board action was recorded related to the recognitions beyond presentation of plaques and photos.
