Belleville students honored for writing, competitions and trade-program participation
Summary
Student government and staff recognized young writers, a regional FBLA champion in financial math, and participation in a manufacturing/trades presentation.
At the Jan. 27 Belleville Public School District board meeting, student government representative Candy Dong and district staff highlighted student accomplishments and upcoming student-support programs.
Candy Dong, the student board representative, told the board that the SGL hosted a bingo night on Jan. 22 with 72 presale tickets sold and “over a 140 participants.” She also noted that Belleville High School hosted a trade presentation where students explored trade and manufacturing careers through hands-on demonstrations. The New Jersey Manufacturing Extension Program provided demonstrations in welding and laser etching for more than 50 students, administrators later said.
Middle-school language-arts teacher Ms. Omari presented winners of a 100-word Halloween-themed creative-writing contest; the board acknowledged a list of student winners by name at the meeting, including Jarettezi Mejias, Mia Tortorolo, Michelle Villa, Ronnie Jimenez, Tatiana Mendez, Denise Guerra, Alexis Cabalba, Mason Barreto, Alexa McIntosh, Gavin Leonow, Nikaya Bay, Damian Bueno, Julia Escander, Jasmine Marquis and Sophia Nugin.
Gerard Fabiano, a Belleville High School teacher and FBLA advisor, announced that student Fabian Alva placed first in the region in the financial-math competition, beating more than 100 students; Fabiano said the contest covered percentage, depreciation and interest-rate calculations. Fabiano presented Alva with a trophy during the meeting.
The district also promoted CASA’s homework help program for grades 7–12 at 522 Courtland Street, Monday–Thursday, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and noted a parent-program-of-studies presentation scheduled for Feb. 4 (in person) and Feb. 6 (virtual).
Why it matters: recognition highlights classroom, extracurricular and career-exploration successes and publicizes ongoing student support services.
What’s next: the board publicly recognized the winners and will continue to promote career and academic-support events to families.
