Board Discusses Welding-Equipment Bid for Ag Shop, Staff Recommends Miller/Patton Option

Cannon County Board of Education members discussed bids Dec. 12 to outfit a renovated agriculture shop and were told staff recommended accepting the first bid from Patton Welding despite its higher price.
An instructor asked that the district stay with Miller-brand equipment to match existing Miller units already in the ag shop, and staff cited three reasons for the recommendation: brand consistency to ease instruction, Patton's equipment capability (cutting thicker metal than the CNC option), and an existing local relationship with Patton for argon gas and supplies.
"We're basically gutting that whole area, that's the welding area, and building out new since we have ISM. That was part of our ISM grant funding," the presenter said, explaining the project is grant funded. Staff also noted Patton is more local than an out-of-state bidder (Lincoln Electric) and that compatibility with the instructor's existing Miller equipment supported the recommendation.
Board members were not recorded taking a formal vote in the workshop. The item was presented in the consent/contract-bid section and staff said they were requesting to proceed with the first bid from Patton Welding.
