Board names Dr. DeLeea acting assistant superintendent; HR office to absorb prior duties

The Belleville Board of Education on Dec. 16 appointed Dr. DeLeea as acting assistant superintendent, confirming the district’s interim leadership ahead of the winter break.
The move was announced during the meeting’s presentations segment, when Superintendent Parapato introduced Dr. DeLeea as the presenter standing in for a staff absence. Parapato said the district was honoring students and noted that DeLeea would lead personnel work in an acting capacity.
The appointment drew questions during public comment about whether DeLeea would retain prior titles, such as chief talent officer. Resident Michael Sheldon asked whether DeLeea would “retain his other titles such as chief talent officer or is this all now being assimilated into the assistant, superintendent position?”
Board counsel Mr. Paladino and other board members addressed that question later in the meeting. Trustee remarks and the superintendent’s office clarified that staff who previously reported to DeLeea will remain in their current roles and that those functions will be overseen by DeLeea in his acting role. "Those duties will be absorbed by the personnel that are working within his office, and he will be overseeing them as well as still functioning to assist in any way he can," a trustee said during the meeting.
Board members said they did not plan to hire an immediate replacement for any absorbed duties. "So we're not hiring anybody to replace or looking to replace that position," the trustee added.
The appointment was part of the meeting’s personnel resolutions (agenda section 9), which passed on a roll call vote. The board did not announce a search for a permanent assistant superintendent at the Dec. 16 meeting.
The board acknowledged the temporary nature of the assignment and indicated any longer-term staffing changes would be addressed by the superintendent’s office in future meetings.
The district is in its usual academic-year personnel cycle; trustees said the action was intended to maintain continuity for human-resources functions while administrative staffing is reviewed.
Dr. DeLeea and the superintendent’s office did not provide a public statement beyond items discussed at the meeting. The board returned to the agenda after confirming the resolution in the personnel block.
