Cannon County Officials add Afternoon Bus to Ease Overcrowding at Middle School

Cannon County school officials told the Board of Education Dec. 12 that the district began running an additional afternoon bus this fall to address overcrowding and safety concerns on the mid-route that carries Cannon County Middle School students.
The superintendent's report said a 90-passenger bus was routinely carrying more than 80 students, prompting the district to trial sending a second bus for afternoon transport. "Mister Ricky had just approached me that his bus, which ... transports the middle school students ... was overcorrect," said Miss Mason (supervisor), describing the safety concern that led to the change.
Officials said the second bus began operating Nov. 1 and costs the district $60 per day for the afternoon run. The district reported parents have met students at the school and were appreciative of the change. Board members were told the line-item for the extra bus exists in the current budget and that the expense is not expected to create an immediate budget problem; contract renewals for transportation are scheduled for next year.
No formal board action was recorded during the workshop; staff said they would continue the arrangement and monitor safety and cost impacts while preparing for next year's transportation contract negotiations.
