Wilson County Board organizes for new term; William Blake Boykin elected chair
Summary

Wilson County's Board of Education installed newly elected and re-elected members and selected its leadership during its Dec. 9, 2024, organizational meeting.
At the start of the meeting, several newly elected or re-elected board members were sworn in. David Batts was sworn in as the District 2 board member and John Kyle as the District 4 board member; William Blake Boykin, reelected for District 6, also took the oath of office.
The board then moved into its organizational business. Mrs. Powell moved to approve the Dec. 9, 2024 meeting agenda, a motion seconded by Mr. Brink; the board approved the agenda unanimously. The board also approved minutes from its Nov. 25, 2024 special and regular meetings on a unanimous vote (motion by Dr. Christine Fitch, second by Mr. Breen).
For board leadership, nominations for chair were opened and closed per the board's rules. William Blake Boykin was nominated and received the majority support; the chair selection was recorded as having been made with a vote described in the meeting as "selected as chairman with vote of 5 2 2," with board members Mrs. Powell and Dr. Fitch noted as not raising their hands. Following the selection, Boykin took the gavel.
Nominations for vice chair were then offered; Ryan Vrain and Dr. Christine Fitch were nominated. Dr. Fitch removed her name, and the board closed the vice-chair nominations by acclamation.
Later in the meeting the board voted to adjourn into closed session to consider student and personnel matters and to consult with the board attorney. The motion to enter closed session was moved and seconded and carried unanimously.
Why it matters: Organizational actions set who will lead the board and steer policy priorities for the coming year. The installation of newly elected members and the formal selection of the chair and vice chair determine who will preside over future meetings and committee assignments.
