Beloit Learning Academy proposes electricity & magnetism and expanded forensic science courses for term 4

Beloit Learning Academy (BLA) staff presented two new course proposals to the Teaching, Learning, Equity & People Services Committee and asked the committee to forward them to the board consent agenda next month.
The first proposal, Electricity and Magnetism (Part 1), would introduce students to electrical systems, energy transfer and engineering trade‑offs. Presenters said the course will align to Beloit Memorial High School standards and use OpenSciEd, an open educational resource, so students receive standards‑aligned materials.
The second, Forensic Science Part B, would extend a current Forensic Science A class by adding deeper measurement practice, microscopic evidence analysis and pattern evaluation. BLA staff said the forensic course uses computer simulations and real‑world problem‑solving where students examine evidence, fingerprinting, blood typing and DNA fragments to determine likely suspects.
Presenters told the committee both proposals already have student interest—BLA typically has at least 20 students interested in these electives. The committee’s practice is to review course proposals in this meeting and then place them on the consent agenda for board approval; committee members said they expect to return the items for board action next month.
No formal vote on the courses occurred at the committee; staff will present final recommendations at next month’s meeting for inclusion on the consent agenda.
