The hearing opened with notice that the application — from Abed Amro doing business as Penny Pantry — had been advertised on Jan. 9, 2025. Mayor Barry Aiken called for public comment; only one person, Pam Givens, signed up but said she had intended to speak at the regular town meeting and offered no comment on the license.
An employee at the store, Shawn Aldridge, told the board he has worked at the business for more than 20 years and said Linda Chapman remains the manager. The police chief reported a background check on the new owner and said there were no violations after the owner was notified to stop service pending licensing. "Yes," the chief said when asked whether the background check was satisfactory.
Alderman Giannini moved to approve the license; Alderman Lightsey seconded. The board voted by voice — "aye" — and the motion carried. The board did not record an itemized roll-call tally in the transcript.
The beer board meeting was immediately adjourned and the town's regular meeting followed.
