Trustees voted to sponsor Leadership Oklahoma’s Durant segment with a $6,000 contribution to help cover meals, facility rental and local transportation for the community portion of the program. The event will take place March 7–9 and will bring a class of roughly 50 Leadership Oklahoma participants to Durant for two-and-a-half days; the Choctaw Resort will host the conference components while the community portion will include downtown visits, museums and local restaurants.
Greg Phillips and other members of the Durant host committee described the agenda and the organizers’ goal of showcasing downtown Durant, Southeastern Oklahoma State University facilities and local museums to leaders from across the state. Organizers said the Choctaw Nation is covering a large portion of the overall event budget (venue, food and some entertainment) and that the community sponsorship request is intended to fund the Durant-specific activities outside the resort.
Trustees discussed whether city funding would be more appropriate and queried the legal constraints on using public funds for a sponsorship targeted at a non-open educational group; City Manager Pam (identified in the meeting) said she would need to consult with the city attorney about whether the city could legally provide funding for the specific restricted event. Trustees noted the tourism authority’s budgetary pressures but several board members argued the long‑term marketing benefit of exposing statewide leaders to Durant.
Motion and vote: the board moved and seconded a motion to allocate $6,000 to sponsor the Durant segment of Leadership Oklahoma, drawn from tourism authority funds. Votes recorded in the transcript: Trustee Burke — Yes; Trustee Scherer — Yes; Trustee Fort — Yes; Chairman Hunt — Yes; an additional trustee recorded a yes vote as well. The motion carried.
