The Madison County Planning Board approved a conditional-use permit for a proposed monopole cell tower near the county’s new Amazon facility to improve wireless coverage in the area.
Mike Jarvis and Belinda Bodiam, representing the applicant and consultant Neil Shaffer, told the board they propose a Montpel monopole designed to accommodate up to four wireless carriers; they said one carrier (AT&T) is already contracted and others including Verizon and C Spire were being pursued. "We're proposing a Montpel tower for, up to 4 carriers. We have 1 already committed carrier and 1 in the process," Jarvis said.
Board members asked whether C Spire would be included; the applicant said they were "working on that." The proposal was presented as improving coverage for new developments and residents near the Amazon site and adjacent areas, including known dead spots.
After brief public discussion there were no objections on the record and a board member moved to approve the conditional-use permit. The motion passed. Planning staff will proceed with permit documentation and condition compliance as required by county rules for telecommunications structures.
The approval is conditioned on standard site, safety and permitting requirements for towers and the applicant’s obligations to secure carrier leases; county staff noted the temporary and final inspection and permitting steps that precede construction.
