County staff presented a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Bureau of Land Management to allow construction of a pedestrian trail in Montezuma County’s right of way near the Lamb House site on Road G, adjacent to the Canyons of the Ancients area. Staff said the BLM has signed the MOU and asked the board to sign it so the agency can proceed with trail construction.
Staff explained the MOU is limited in scope: the county is not agreeing to build the trail, is not surrendering any existing rights in the right of way, and retains the authority to maintain the road and right of way. The trail would provide a safer pedestrian connection from nearby parking areas to the Lamb House site and reduce pedestrians walking on the road shoulder. The MOU formalizes the parties’ understanding before work begins.
Why it matters: the trail is intended to reduce pedestrian exposure to vehicle traffic on a narrow stretch of Road G and to improve public access to a publicly managed historic site. Staff said BLM’s aims include highlighting the site’s historic values and improving visitor safety.
Commissioners indicated support and noted that moving pedestrians off the road would be beneficial. The BLM had already signed the document; staff asked commissioners to sign at the next meeting.
Ending: Commissioners agreed the trail would be a positive safety improvement, and staff said they would present the signed MOU for the board’s signature the following day.
