Mayor names committee and board assignments; council approves 7-0

Mayor McArthur on Jan. 7 proposed a slate of council committee assignments and regional-board appointments. The council voted unanimously to approve the mayor's committee assignments and to confirm council representatives on local and regional agencies.

What the mayor proposed: The mayor announced the three standing council committees and his selections for membership and chairs. Finance and Governance was proposed with the mayor as chair and Councilmember Gabriela Rodriguez and Councilmember Aaron Starr as members. Public Works and Transportation was proposed with Mayor Pro Tem Gabe Turan and Councilmember Gabriela Basuah as members and the mayor as chair for the committee. Community Services, Public Safety & Housing Development was proposed with Councilmember Bert Perillo and Councilmember Jessica Perez as members, with the mayor as chair.

Council approval: The council approved the committee lineup and a set of appointments to regional boards and joint powers authorities in separate unanimous roll-call votes. Approved appointments included Oxnard's representatives to Gold Coast Transit, Ventura County Airport Authority, Ventura County Transportation Commission, the Ventura County Regional Sanitation District and other regional bodies. Several council members asked staff to ensure alternates were named for boards in which Oxnard has voting representation.

Why it matters: Council membership influences which members will vet items and represent Oxnard on regional issues including transportation, water, energy and economic development. Council members said they will serve where the mayor asked and will rely on staff and alternates to cover meetings when scheduling conflicts arise.
