Two members of the public urged the Hudsonville Public School District Board of Education on Jan. 27 to maintain the district’s diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts and to safeguard students from discrimination.
Laura Pickard, who identified herself as a parent of very young children, described Hudsonville as a community with "multiracial families," farms worked by migrant hands and "stores and shops that employ people with disabilities." She said the district’s DEI materials on the district website made her proud and that those supports help protect students facing mental-health challenges. "Please don't take it away," Pickard said, urging the board not to remove protections she described as essential for students’ safety and sense of belonging.
A second public commenter, identified in the transcript only as a resident, referenced federal actions and said executive orders and actions by the U.S. Department of Education have targeted DEI initiatives. The speaker urged the board to "ensure you continue to identify and address barriers to equitable learning environments" and said eliminating DEI programs would "open the door for students to bully, harass, or intimidate other students." The commenter added, "Do not send Hudsonville back to the pre 1965 Civil Rights Act era."
Both speakers framed their remarks as appeals to protect current district practices that they said support students from diverse backgrounds. The board did not take immediate formal action on the public comments during the regular meeting segment recorded in the transcript; the comments were heard before the board moved on to consent and other items on the agenda.
