Committee approves bids and routine items: soccer lights, roof work, summer plan and field trips

Committee members recommended or approved several routine school-district items during the meeting, including a bid award recommendation for sports field lighting, acceptance of roofing bids for two middle schools, adoption of a summer learning opportunity assessment plan and approval of overnight/out-of-state student trips.

Miss Angie Miller presented a bid tab for athletic-field lighting at Southern Nash High School, noting the work was funded by a legislative grant of $200,000 and that one bid fell within the available funding. Miller recommended awarding the lighting contract to Musco Lighting for installation at Southern Nash High School. A committee motion to recommend the award to the full board carried by voice vote.

Miller also presented a capital-outlay recommendation to award roof-replacement work at Nash Central Middle School and Southern Nash Middle School to B & M Roofing Contractors. The recommendation reflects capital-outlay funding and committee members moved the contract recommendation to the board; the motion was approved by voice vote.

In academic matters, Dr. Ellis presented the district’s summer learning opportunity and assessment plan, a program that gives students who passed their courses but did not score proficient on associated end-of-grade or end-of-course tests an opportunity for targeted intervention and a retest. Dr. Ellis said the district provides transportation and meals to participants and noted the state policy that counts students who achieve proficiency on a second opportunity toward school and district proficiency measures. The committee adopted the plan by motion.

The committee approved four overnight or out-of-state student trips that met district requirements. Committee members asked a clarification question about one trip that included a single Southern Nash student competing in a band event; staff said the trip would proceed if the student qualifies at the competition.

Other routine actions recorded during committee meetings included approval of prior meeting minutes for several committees and adjournment motions. All approvals were taken by motion and carried by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were provided in the committee discussion.
