Eaton County leaders weigh personnel cuts, contract changes and state relief after millage defeat

The Eaton County Board of Commissioners met in a non-action workshop to review the county's fiscal outlook after a recent millage defeat and to offer recommendations to the incoming board on where to look for savings.

Chair opened the meeting by saying, "This meeting will be not have any action items, and I won't support anything that involves action," and framed the session as advisory only. Melissa, the county finance director, told commissioners she expects next year’s budget process "to be significantly more intensive than it has been in prior years" as departments face closer scrutiny of cost drivers.

Why it matters: County officials said the largest pressure is personnel costs and that recurring revenue will not cover current service levels without changes. Commissioners and staff floated a range of options — from targeted hiring freezes and position reviews to renegotiating contracts and lobbying the state for relief — but did not take formal votes.
